AL-RUQYAH AL-SHARIAH VS AL-RUQYAH AL-SHIRKIYYAH – MAGICIANS AND THEIR SPELLS – IMAMS SELLING MAGIC TO VULNERABLE MUSLIMS

A LETTER OF GREAT CONCERN TO ALL MUSLIMS

To our Muslim Brothers and Sisters on the Gold Coast,

We start by praising Allah Ta’ala, as only He should be praised, and may the peace and blessings of Allah Ta’ala be upon his last and final Messenger Muhammad Ibn Abdullaah ﷺ, and upon all of those who follow in the path of righteousness until the Day of Judgement. We ask Allah to grant the reader of this letter, only that which pleases Him best Subhanahu. To proceed.

The Issue:

Firstly, we write this public letter/announcement as a type of warning to our brothers and sisters, and a type of enjoining the good and forbidding the evil, only after all possible means of private discourse have been exhausted and negated, this is written only after we warned we would publicly raise the issue, to no avail, however we will still withhold the name of the person so as the awareness is raised on the matter still trying to contain the possible fitan, in hope that Allah Ta’ala will allow this letter to reach him, so that he may repent and immediately cease and desist from continuing this (at the very least) charlatan show, as he is leading people to kufr and shirk by associating partners with Allah. We see this as a major form of Injustice which must be addressed and the Muslims must be taught the correct understanding of Tawheed.

In Islam, we should always stand for justice as a matter of principle, whether for Muslims or non-Muslims, even if justice should side against us.

Allah said:

“O you who believe, be persistently standing firm in justice as witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. Follow not your desires, lest you not be just. If you distort your testimony or refuse to give it, then Allah is aware of what you do.”

An-Nisa 4:135

And Allah said:

“Verily, Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and He forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded.”

An-Nahl 16:90

And Allah said:

“Verily, Allah commands you to render trusts to whom they are due and when you judge between people to judge with justice. Excellent is that which Allah instructs you. Verily, Allah is ever hearing and seeing.”

An-Nisa 4:58

Justice is one of the core tenets of Islamic teachings. Whatever is just is necessarily a part of the religion of Islam.

Ibn Al-Qayyim said:

“Allah the Exalted has made clear in his law (sharia) that the objective is the establishment of justice between His servants and fairness among the people, so whichever path leads to justice and fairness is part of the religion and can never oppose it.” al-Ṭuruq al-Ḥikmīya 13

We should never let our hatred for people or their sins be a cause for us to oppress them. Hatred, when misdirected at people instead of evil in the abstract, is a dangerous spiritual disease that often leads to acts of injustice, and this letter, is in response to the action and not the person.

Allah said:

“O you who believe, be persistently standing firm for Allah as witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just, for that is nearer to righteousness. Fear Allah, for verily, Allah is aware of what you do.”

Al-Ma’idah 5:8

These commands apply equally to unbelievers as they apply to believers. Muslims should be just and fair to all non-Muslims in every circumstance.

Al-Qurtubi said:

“This verse shows that the unbelief of the unbeliever does not prevent him from enjoying justice.” Tafseer Al-Qurtubi 5:8

In Islam, even the highest official, the Caliph, is subject to the same rules of justice as everyone else. There is a famous incident in which Ali Ibn Abu Talib lost a court case to a Christian because he lacked evidence, even though Ali was the Caliph at the time. Nobody is outside the fold of the Shariah, not the ordinary Muslim, not the Khatib, not the Shaikh or the Imam not even the Caliph of the ummah. So, we hope the reader will understand this is not a personal attack, but a necessary address of a major evil.

To further disclose, this person of influence, and one of the leading figures amongst the Muslim community on the Gold Coast; has over the last 10-12 years, and observably, objectively and specifically the last 18 months involved himself in matters which carry at the very least the Hukm of Haram, and at the apex of it the Hukm of Kufr-Akbar, for both him and the participants, and we will in sha Allah explain the Fiqh behind it in detail.

This person has undertaken for himself to be a Raqi (one who heals/helps using the shar’ ((specifically it must only ever be, The Qur’an and Sunnah)) to the vulnerable and desperate Muslims and Non-Muslims on the Gold Coast, but how this person attains the objective is clearly Magic and dealing with Jinn, whether he intends magic to be the vessel to the cure  or not. Included at the end of the letter is the actual Sihr done by this person, and to the untrained eye it looks sahih, yet it is filled with satanic symbolism, be it purposefully or not. And it is in its essence what the Ulama have described as al-Ruqyah Shirkiyyah instead of al-Ruqyah Shar’iah.

There are many bida’at we can charge the person with, however this matter overtakes the bid’ah which in itself is highly problematic. Particularly this person uses Babylonian magic and talismans with numerology, and deceptively gives (sometimes sells) them to the Muslims, saying that particular (Taweez) talisman will somehow help the situation, and should be relied upon besides Allah Ta’ala.

This in its essence is a violation of the Names and Attributes of Allah, (at-Tawheed al-Asma wal-Sifaat).

For a Ruqyah to be within the guide lines of the Shariah it must fulfill 3 conditions:

  1. It must be from the Qur’an and Sunnah.
  2. It must be audible, recognizable, clear and not silent, unclear, murmured and not understood.
  3. The person receiving the Ruqyah MUST KNOW THAT THE RAQI (Person Reciting) IS SEEKING THE CURE FROM ALLAH, THE RAQI IS NOT THE CURE.

These situations where people find them selves in dire need of help, range from:

  • Those who think black magic was done on them, and they turn to this person, to ironically help (with more black magic).
  • Those who have illnesses and diseases.
  • Those who have marital problems.
  • Those who are financially struggling.
  • Those who can’t have children.
  • Those who wish a worldly gain. (And many more)

All of these are easily fixed with Tawakkul al-Allaah, reliance on Allah Only Subhanahu. Increasing the ibada, salaah, fasting, reciting Qur’an, giving Sadaqa enjoyning good and forbidding evil. Yet the people search for a short-cut no matter how expensive, or even worse, how damaging to their iman the ruqyah/taweez/hijab is.

This person has learnt a particular-way to present ruqyah to people so it looks appealing, chraming and authentic, however while the ruqyah al-shariyyah is clear, easy and simple, this person makes it look like a magician’s act, with papers, numbers, names of (what we perceive to be) Jinn, burning of taweez, hanging amulets at people’s homes, at different locations, mumbling in the dark while treating people, all of this making his Ruqyah of the al-Shirkiyyah type. (And for each example and claim we have an eye witness if necessary, alhamdulillah). And all of it is not permissible unanimously by all 4 Madhhabs. However we will only use the Hanafi Madhhab as the Hujja in sha Allaah, since this person claims to be of the Ahnaf. And the evidences are many alhmadulillah. To start, RasulAllah ﷺ said:

  • “Whoever ties a knot and blows on it has performed magic, and whoever performs magic has committed idolatry/shirk. Whoever hangs something as a charm will be entrusted to it.” Sunan An-Nasa’i
  • “Whoever hangs an amulet around his neck, then Allah will not fulfill his wishes. Whoever hangs a seashell as a charm, then Allah will not leave him without penalty.” Bukhari

Dealing with the jinn and magicians who use (or are used by) jinn, is a serious issue, and is a door that leads to evil and mischief; how often have people are affected by this evil? It is sufficient to know that shirk only came to mankind through them.

The Prophet ﷺ said, telling us how Allaah taught His slaves:

“I have created all My slaves with the inclination to worship Me alone, but the devils come to them and turn them away from their religion. They forbid to them that which I have permitted to them, and they tell them to associate others with Me for which I have not sent down any authority.’” Muslim

There are believers and Muslims among the jinn, and also kufar and evildoers. But the fact that they are concealed from man means; that we cannot be sure about any one of them, and this gives us cause for concern about their tricks and treachery, especially with the spread of ignorance and bid’ah (innovation), which is the harbinger of shirk. Usually these creatures make man fall into that which is haraam, and bring only a little benefit.

Allah Ta’ala says:

“And verily, there were men among mankind who took shelter with the males among the jinn, but they (jinn) increased them (mankind) in sin and transgression”

al-Jinn 72:6

Hence the fatwas of the scholars state that it is haraam to deal with the jinn at all times – whether with the believers or the kufar among them – and it is essential not to take this matter lightly, so as to close the door to fitnah and confusion, and out of concern for those who have faith in Allaah.  For a person may lose out on his akhira due to us being silent and non-complacent, as Shaikh al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah said; “..if you and I are both silent, then who will let the people know about the deviation.” majmoo al-Fatawa

As for the Fiqh rulings on cases such as this:

From the Daleel: The Messenger of Allaah ﷺ said, He is not of us (He is not a Muslim), the one who (looks for) evil omens, or the one on whose behalf they are sought (omens are signs, information, from the unseen used against people), or the one who practices soothsaying, or the one on whose behalf it is practiced; or the one who practices sorcery, or the one for whom sorcery is done.” (At-Tabaraanee)

He ﷺ also said, “And the magician will never be successful no matter what amount (of skill) he may attain” .

This hadith doesn’t mean sihr (dark magic) doesn’t work, it means that the sihr used will only be a tool in taking a person to his fate, his fate isnt the sihr (dark magic), but what is given after it has passed, so magic won’t be successful  in changing what he grants.

Allah will grant the person increase in his life on the back of the sahir (the one who did sihr on him) because of the sihr (dark magic) he suffered, so the sahir (sorcerer) any misfortune he suffers in his life, or anything he falls short in will be because of the people he did sihr on. As a result of this the Sahir, both the one who practices it or has it done for him is continually in a state of falling short in his life, this is how the sahir never prospers.

No matter what benefit he receives from the sihr, and it can only be a small wordly gain compared to; the absolute, immense and everlasting punishment in the akhira, it is always short of what he would have received had he worked for it himself. And Allah’s Refuge is sought.

The Prophet ﷺ commanded: “Kill every sorcerer, for this is the punishment ordained by Allah.” And we quote the hadith only as a hujjah and not to call for the murder of anyone!!!

This is the fiqh (legal) opinion of Imam Abu Hanifah, Imam Maalik, and Imam Ahmad the founders of the Madhhabs of Law in Islam, in all four madhhabs (schools of Law) including the Shafii Madhhab, practicing Sihr is a capital punishment and one of the worst sins a person can commit on the same level with Kufr, so how about having such a person be the imam, the one whose Islam is in the very least questionable, because Allah says many times in the Quran, it is Kufr.

Allah Ta’ala in a single verse (al-Baqarah 2:102) says Sihr is Disbelief (Kufr) multiple times to emphasis this point, that the person who practices dark magic and the person who has it practiced for him have left Islam:

“And they followed [instead] what the devils had recited during the reign of Solomon. It was not Solomon who disbelieved, but the devils disbelieved, (by) teaching people magic and that which was revealed to the two angels at Babylon, Harut and Marut. But the two angels do not teach anyone unless they say, “We are a trial, so do not disbelieve [by practicing magic].” And [yet] they learn from them that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife. But they do not harm anyone through it except by permission of Allah. And the people learn what harms them and does not benefit them (the Sahir is in a state of loss in his life). But the Children of Israel certainly knew that whoever purchased the magic (practiced it or had it practiced for them) would not have in the Hereafter any share. And wretched is that for which they sold themselves, if they only knew.” (the extent of their loss in this life and the next)

al-Baqarah 102

According to Ibn Qudamah, the punishment for practicing Sihr was also the death sentence and this is the opinion reported by the companions of the prophet (saws), among others, of Umar (ra), Uthman Ibn Affan (ra), Ibn Umar (ra), Hafsa (ra), Jundub Ibn Abdullah (ra), Jundub Ibn Ka’b (ra), Qays Ibn Sa’d (ra) and Umar Ibn Abdu’l-Aziz, it is also the view of Imam Abu Hanifa and Imam Malik.

According to The Mufasir Imam Qurtubi, scholars of Law disagreed about the difference in punishment between a Muslim who practices Sihr and a Dhimmi (non muslim in Islamic lands) who practices Sihr. According to Malik, the punishment for a Muslim person who uses Sihr for himself that contains words of disbelief is the death sentence. He must not be requested to repent, and his repentance would not be accepted.

This is because his Sihr is something which he keeps secret (as most sihr today), just like a disbeliever or an adulterer. This is also because Allah describes Sihr as disbelief: “They taught not any man, without they said: We are but a temptation; do not disbelieve” (2:102), the fact that practicing Sihr (Dark Magic) is Kufr (meaning a person has left Islam) is also the view of Imam Ahmad, Imam Abu Thawr, Imam Ishaq, Imam Shafi‘i and Imam Abu Hanifa.” (Al-Jami al-Ahkam al-Qur’an Tafsir al-Qurtubi, 2/48)

Abu Hurairah (ra) related that ‘The Prophet said: “Avoid seven most dangerous things.” The Companions then asked: ‘O Messenger of Allah ! What are these things’ He answered: ‘Making anyone or any thing a partner of Allah; practicing magic; killing a living being whose life has been declared sacred by Allah without justification; practicing usury (something we will deal with in the future in sha Allah); misappropriating the property of an orphan; running away from the infidels in a battle; and slandering chaste, innocent, believing women.’ (Bukhari and Muslim) The Prophet said, “Supplication benefits in things that have happened and things that have not yet happened.”

Allah Ta’ala says:

“And do not invoke besides Allah that which neither benefits you nor harms you, for if you did, then indeed you would be of the wrongdoers.”

Yunus 10:106

“…And whoever relies upon Allah – then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent.”

Talaq 65:3

It says in al-Insaaf by al-Mardaawi (10/351): “As for the one who claims to have power over the jinn and claims that he can summon them and they obey him, he should not be denounced as a kaafir or executed, but he should be given a ta’zeer punishment.” He should be given a severe ta’zeer punishment that should not reach the extent of execution, according to the correct view of our madhhab; and it was said that his ta’zeer punishment may reach the extent of execution.” End quote.

It says in al-Mawsoo’ah al-Fiqhiyyah (14/18): “As for seeking help from anyone other than Allaah, it is either from humans or from the jinn. If it is seeking help from the jinn, then this is forbidden and it may be shirk and kufr.“

“And verily, there were men among mankind who took shelter with the males among the jinn, but they (jinn) increased them (mankind) in sin and transgression”

al-Jinn 72:6

Shaykh al-Albaani said in al-Silsilah al-Saheehah (hadeeth no. 2760):“This also includes some who appear outwardly to be righteous treating people by means of that which they call “spiritual medicine (al-tibb al-roohaani)”, whether that is in the ancient manner by contacting his qareen or jinn companion – as they used to do during the Jaahiliyyah – or it is done by means of what they call “summoning the spirits”. Similar to that in my opinion is hypnotism. All of these are means that are not acceptable in sharee’ah, because they all boil down to seeking the help of the jinn who were the cause of the mushrikeen going astray.” End Quote.

The claims of some of those who seek their help, that they only seek the help of the righteous among them, are false claims, because they usually cannot mix with them and live with them in ways that will show whether they are righteous or not. We know from experience that most of the humans with whom you keep company turn out not to be good friends. Allah Says:

“O you who believe! Verily, among your wives and your children there are enemies for you (who may stop you from the obedience of Allaah); therefore beware of them!”

al-Taghaabun 64:14

This has to do with people who can be seen, so what do you think about the jinn, concerning whom Allah says:

“O children of Adam, let not Satan tempt you as he removed your parents from Paradise, stripping them of their clothing to show them their private parts. Indeed, he sees you, he and his tribe, from where you do not see them. Indeed, We have made the devils allies to those who do not believ”

al-A’raaf 7:27

The following ahadith are clear.

1 – “Whoever goes to a fortune teller and asks him about something and believes him, his prayers will not be accepted for forty days.” Narrated by Muslim in his Sahih.

2 – “Whoever goes to a soothsayer and believes what he says has disbelieved in that which was revealed to Muhammad .” Narrated by Abu Dawood.

The first hadeeth does not point to Kufr-Akbar whereas the second hadeeth does.

There is no contradiction between the two hadeeth. What is meant by the hadeeth “Whoever goes to a soothsayer and believes what he says has disbelieved in that which was revealed to Muhammad” is that the one who asks a soothsayer a question, believing that he tells the truth and that he knows the unseen, has committed an act of kufr, because he has gone against the Qur’aan in which Allaah says:

قُل لَّا يَعْلَمُ مَن فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ الْغَيْبَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ ۚ وَمَا يَشْعُرُونَ أَيَّانَ يُبْعَثُونَ

Say: “None in the heavens and the earth knows the Ghaib (Unseen) except Allaah”

al-Naml 27:65

As for the second hadeeth, “Whoever goes to a fortune teller and asks him about something and believes him, his prayers will not be accepted for forty days”, which was narrated by Muslim, it does not contain the words “and believes him”. Thus, we learn that if a person goes to a fortune teller and asks him anything, his prayer will not be accepted for forty days, and if he believes him, then he has committed an act of kufr Akbar and left the fold of Islam via the action.

To Conclude:

To know whether a person is using al-Ruqyah Shirkiyyah instead of al-Ruqyah Shar’iah, you will find at least one of the following characteristics in him/her but it is not limited to only these, and if a person who treats people suffering from sihr (Witchcraft) or other related illnesses possesses these characteristics, then this person is a Sahir also (Magician/Witch).

  1. He asks the patient his and his Mother’s names.
  2. He takes a sweaty garment from the patient e.g. a piece of cloth that is in contact with skin, like a vest, cap, handkerchief etc. He takes it as a tracker for the jinn [Demon] to follow.
  3. He sometimes asks for an animal, with certain specifications, to slaughter it without initiating the slaughter with the Name of Allah, He may use the sacrificial blood to stain some painful areas of the patient, or throw the carcass in on a ruined site. One of the Methods to bring about a Demon (See Contents Above).
  4. He writes incantations. Mostly Polytheistic and full of Praise to the Chief Demon.
  5. He recites unclear incantations. He might recite Qur’anic verses, only to take the trust of the Patient, but then he starts to recite the polytheistic words to praise the demons.
  6. He gives the patient a hijab (incantation written on a piece of paper), which contains squares within which letters or figures are written. Figures and mixture of Integers also act as a Portal for the jinn, also called ‘KEY’ or ‘CHARM’.
  7. He instructs the patient to isolate himself/herself in a dark room and not to talk to people for a specific period of time. The common people call it al-hijba (act of remaining indoors for a long time).
  8. He sometimes instructs the patient not to touch water for a specific period of time, usually forty days. This indicates that this particular Jinn, working for the sahir, is Christian.
  9. He gives the patient some items to bury in the ground. It is always the KEY/CHARM (portal for the jinn).
  10. He gives the patient some pieces of paper to burn and use as incense for his or her body. Jinn are attracted and also repelled by incense, depending upon what kind of incense is burnt.
  11. He murmurs unclear words.
  12. He sometimes informs the patient of his name, his town and the purpose of the visit. That he knows from the Qareen of that person (see Types of Jinn in Contents).
  13. He writes broken letters on a piece of paper (hijab) or on a plate made of white porcelain, and instructs the patient to dissolve the writing in water, and then drink it.

Points: 4,6,9,10 & 13 have been clearly observed from this person by witnesses.

If you discover that this man is a Sahir, do not go to him; or else you are the person whom the Prophet ﷺ describes in the following hadith:

“Whoever goes to a soothsayer and believes what he says, has disbelieved in the Message sent to Muhammad and his prayers will not be accepted for forty days.”

Brothers and Sisters, in the very least, imagine your prayer is not accepted nor any of your ibadat for 40 days every time you take ilm from this person, yet you still must do them to fulfill your obligations to Allah Ta’ala, imagine passing away in such a state, the grim possibilities are endless and Allah’s Help is sought.

We finally ask you then, what is the ruling on praying behind such a person daily, and having the said person answer your questions, marry you, bury you, certify your food halal, teach your children and your wives, and we seek refuge with Allah from such a future.

It is also important to note, that in Islam if a person becomes a kafir his marriage is terminated, it is no longer valid, any relations they have with their spouse is then an act of Zina (fornication).

Allah in the Quran says those who practice sihr (dark magic) have left the religion, they are Kufar, and the Prophet ﷺ said the one who practices sihr (dark magic) and the one for whom it is practiced are the same under Law. While this isn’t a definite fiqh ruling on the matter in this article, we mention it because it is something serious, many people are living in Zina and don’t realize it, so they should get advice from qualified scholars about their situation. And Allah’s Help is sought.

“And whoever relies upon Allah – then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent.”

talaq 65:3.

This letter will answer why we chose to avoid gatherings with such people, and it is not out of enmity or hatred to the general Muslim masses, for we wish upon our brothers that which we wish upon our own children and our own selves, but the avoidance is due to being associated with the guilty party through gatherings and such events, and Allah’s Help is sought.

We ask Allah to guide the said individual back to al-Islaam or to stop him in the contrary, for the damage is great and we are but a few slaves aware of it, may Allah guide us to the way of rasulAllaah ﷺ and his sahaba, may He Subhanahu save us from community leaders who disguise Sihr with ruqya, verily Every Sihr is Kufr-Akbar and Kufr-Akbar leads out of the fold of Islaam.

Anything correct is by the will of Allaah Ta’ala, and anything wrong is only by the work of our mere hands.

And may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon his Last and Final Messenger, Muhammad Ibn Abdullah ﷺ, his righteous Family and his Sahaba.

The Images of Sihr is on the picture below, used only as an illustration so Mulsims can recognise the evil that these sorcerers sell as khair. And we seek refuge in Allah from every sorcerer and from the evil of the men and shayateen.

* May Allah save us all from the evil of these Magicians, as you can evidently see they use numerology and numbers when making the spell.
